I listen to EDM while doing HIT cycling sessions indoors for two reasons: it helps with RPE, and with the right headphones also blocks out the fan noise. On the other hand, I don’t think it’s safe to ride outdoors with headphones, and riding around with a speaker blaring is super lame (sorry speaker people). While I might be giving up some of the workout intensity, I don’t care; crashing is worse for your fitness. Giving away some of the content in Dylan’s safety discussion, there are ways to mitigate that risk, but personally I still wouldn’t do it. Part of why music works for me is that it’s a distraction, and anything that takes your attention away from the environment you’re in, when that environment is hostile, isn’t a good thing. All IMO of course :).

If you are going to then bone conduction ones like aftershokz aeropex keep the outside world unblocked – not for me in town but nice to get s bit of radio in the background quietly on a long weekend spin – and you can even get turn by turn garmin navigation!
How does the turn-by-turn navigation work (i.e. head unit paired to phone, triggers audio on the headphones connected to the phone)?
It should also be illegal to listen to EDM while doing a workout titled “Raining Blood” 😉
Guilty 🙂
