Garmin Varia RCT715 – Camera + Radar – Leaks

First off. YES PLEASE! This is a no brainer, and I’m glad that Garmin has [allegedly] finally brought something to market. Specs are a bit thin on the ground (Reddit says $400 and 5 hours of battery life), but if those numbers are true and it’s 4K that’s not terrible; obviously more battery life would be preferred, but hey there’s only so much you can do with one built-in battery.

Good to see a reputable company like Garmin has brought out a product to compete with Cycliq. While Cycliq was a game-changer compared to faffing about with GoPros, and has enabled me to have a successful run with getting a number of dangerous drivers prosecuted, the company has been resistant to customer feedback and has a number of quality issues with what seems anecdotally like a high rate of warranty returns for water ingress and other faults. Bit of a hit-and-miss. The software seems very uncooked but it will be improved in time. The lack of stabilization and the so-so quality is more concerning so I guess we’ll have to wait for the next gen. As is, I wouldn’t pay more than $150 for it.

One good thing I wasn’t expecting is the battery duration. 4h in camera mode is pretty solid.
