Major bummer 🙁 Such a freak accident, there isn’t much you could have done. I’ve had a few myself where you hit an unexpected hole or dip, and the next second you’re on the ground. Unfortunately group rides increase the risk, and races even more so. I just had my first crash this season as well, today in fact, also on gravel. Probably the worst so far, but apart from missing skin from a couple limbs I didn’t break anything thankfully. Sorry to hear about your crash. Never great to hit the floor. That is funny about the shirt. It’s brand new, wife got it for me after I crashed because I can put t-shirts on :). That is a good point about risk. Not that long ago, I probably wouldn’t have made it back to the group after we made the wrong turn. I’ve been thinking about documenting my thoughts on the 2x road vs 2x gravel x 1x thing. As you should be able to tell by looking at my bikes, might be somewhat controversial. Hah! I’ve had the shirt for ~2 years now, I guess it’s still in style 😉
I think 1x vs 2x is more of a personal preference thing, although there seems to be a move towards 1x in gravel lately. Myself I prefer 1x for anything that’s not road. It just makes cleaning and maintenance so much easier. Plus it’s easy to downshift 3 gears at a time if the terrain changes suddenly.
